Abstract
Mobile phone applications (Apps) and its use
in mental health have been growing rapidly. The-
re are a great number of Apps in mental health,
which one with multiple and diverse objectives.
The objective of this study is doing a narrati-
ve review of the literature regarding the use of
mobile phone in mental health care. Doing this
allows to obtain the theoretical fundaments for
the design of a mobile application focused in
people who can suffer anxiety crisis, depressant
crisis or altered emotional states, following the
work guidelines of the third wave of behavioral
and cognitive therapies. A search of the data-
bases is performed: PubMed, MedLine, PsycInfo,
Web of Science and the publications recollected
from the Directory of Open Access Journal, as
well as of the review of specialized literature.
The research is focused in the use of mobile te-
chnology in health, the efficiency of the Apps
in the area of mental health care and the third
wave of behavioral and cognitive therapies and
the model Ecological Momentary Assessment
(EMA). The information compiled allows con-
cluding that the interventions by Apps are po-
tentially efficacious in the treatment of anxiety
and depression due to the improvements of the
symptoms of these disorders. Third wave of be-
havioral and cognitive therapies are useful in the
treatment of anxiety and depression, although
the difference is not significant compare with
behavioral and cognitive therapies (CBT). The
possibility of take care of crisis situations in real
time is a characteristic that powers the efficacy
of the Apps designed for mobile devices. It is
necessary doing more studies in this area of re-
search that allow going deeper into this theme.
